One question that comes up frequently is what museums or tours should be booked in advance. For most first-time visitors to Rome, the biggest thing to worry about may be the lines at the two most popular sights, the Colosseum complex (which includes the Roman Forum and Palatine Hill) and the Vatican Museums. These two destinations can have horrendous lines in high season (roughly Easter through the end of October), and even lines over the winter. “Skip the line” tickets, which can easily be booked on line, are highly recommended. For both the Colosseum and the Vatican Museums, you can book through their official websites:
Another alternative to “skip the lines” at the Colosseum is the Roma Pass; note, however, that the Roma Pass does not include the Vatican Museums. More on the Roma Pass here.
Times is a leading source of breaking news, entertainment, sports, politics, and more for Southern California and the world.
There are also some special tours that have very limited slots available each day, and may get sold out months in advance. A prime example is the Vatican’s Scavi Tour, which tours the necropolis under St. Peter’s Basilica including, it is said, the tomb of St. Peter himself. Advance reservations are a must, booked through the Vatican’s Excavations Office by email or fax.
Other special tours that may get sold out include the Colosseum Underground and Third Ring Tour; the tour of the Domus Aurea (the Emperor Nero’s “Golden House”); and the limited English-language tours of the Domus Romane at Palazzo Valentini. The Galleria Borghese also has limited, timed-entry tickets available which get sold out. http://www.galleriaborghese.it/eng/ga...
These are some of the more popular special openings or tours; other tours or special openings can be quite infrequent and special planning is essential. For example, the magnificent Gothic Hall atSanti Quattro Coronati is open just two days a month, with limited slots available. Information here. Indeed, some amazing places are open just one or two days a year!
